How Expressions of Hope Serves Foster Families
Something to Call Their Own: Bags of Hope
Entering the foster care system is a profoundly disruptive and emotional experience for children. Often, these children arrive at their new homes without any personal belongings, exacerbating feelings of loss and disconnection. To address this, Expressions of Hope has developed the Bags of Hope initiative.
Bags of Hope provides children entering foster care with a backpack filled with age-appropriate items, offering a small yet significant comfort during this difficult transition. For infants, the backpacks include essentials like diapers, baby shampoo, and pacifiers. Toddlers receive items such as toothbrushes, pajamas, and small toys. Elementary-aged children are given socks, books, and nightlights, while teenagers receive hair care products, journals, and gift cards.
These backpacks not only supply immediate needs but also help mitigate the initial fear and uncertainty by providing something the child can call their own—a gesture that often restores a sense of dignity and self-worth.
Resource Center
The Expressions of Hope Resource Center is dedicated to normalizing the lives of vulnerable children by providing essential resources to foster families and those in need. The center stocks a variety of necessary items, from gently used clothing and shoes to baby essentials like strollers and cribs. Moreover, it houses larger items such as beds and household furniture, all available from our extensive storage facilities.
This support allows families to focus on providing a nurturing environment rather than worrying about the logistical and financial burdens of gathering supplies.
By easing these pressures, the Resource Center plays a crucial role in helping a child settle and feel comfortable in their new home, ensuring they have everything they need from the moment they arrive.
Enrichment and Respite Fund
The Enrichment and Respite Fund is a pivotal part of Expressions of Hope’s efforts to enrich the lives of foster children by funding activities and needs that foster a sense of normalcy and inclusion.
This fund covers expenses for sports camps, special medical or dental care, bicycles, graduation costs, and more.
By financing these activities, the Enrichment and Respite Fund ensures children in care have the same opportunities as their peers to participate in extracurricular activities, whether it be joining a sports team, taking music classes, or celebrating milestones such as graduation.
These experiences are invaluable, helping to inspire confidence and foster a sense of belonging, which is essential for their emotional and social development.
